Today I went to a poetry reading by Robert Flanagan who used to be the creative writing director at OWU. It was really cool to hear his stuff and how he was inspired to write his different poems. I really liked his poetry and his style. He's really into form and structure which is nice nowadays cause most people (myself included) are into free verse or loose structure. He was also very good at catching certain feels. Like most of his poems were memories and they really captured the feeling of a memory. I felt like I was remembering it even though they weren't my memories.

The only thing I can say that I didn't like about his poetry was that it was too clear, like after he read it, there was nothing to discuss, which really isn't that bad but it's just not the kind of poetry I find most interesting. My favorite (and what I hope people get from mine) is the kind that you read and you go umm... what did he just say? and then you read it again and you're like okay, now I get it. but then you go back to it a few days later and you make some kind of connection that is just like wow! it makes even more sense now. But then again, I didn't read thru his whole poetry book, maybe he has ones that are like this. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Semper Fi: in a bar in Delaware Ohio on November 10, the USMC birthday. by Robert Flanagan

Oh yeah, you were in the Corps?
See any action? A shooting war?

I had, I said. Oh yeah, where was that?
Toledo, mostly. Coupla times in Detroit.
